Exhibition Guide

This is the cover and how the guide would fold up. I think it is possibly too small for an exhibition guide but will have to get people to test it for it's legibility and how you would handle it.
This is how the guide folds out on the back, I like how the black has printed on the stock it looks strong and stands out.

This is the front side of the guide. I am concerned about how it folds together, because it is quite small and there are a lot of folds it may be too thick when folded in. I also need to improved on the folds as some of the scoring is visible.

Badges

As part of the merchandise which would be in the shop at the exhibition I want to include little pin badges as I think this is appropriate for the audience, a lot of music fans own badges suppoting a band or style of music. I've also been thinking about plectrums as this is appropriate to the subject matter and audience.

I know somebody who can make me some pin badges, I only want a few to show a few different designs and how they would make up part of the exhibiton range.

Exhibition guide

Exhibition guide ready for print, for now I am going to fold in half length ways instead of double sided printing to see how it folds, this could then hold a poster on the other side if it fits together well. If the stock is too thick then double sided printing would be best.

Exhibition guide cover, this is what the guide looks like when all folded together. I was concerned of the size being too small, it is reasonably small but I'm not sure if it's too small yet. I would have to see how it would fit in an actual exhibition space. As a set I think they could work because no-one really wants to take away a large document they have to find a place for.
The back unfolded, I like that it flowes when unfolded, the key page may be irrelevant however. I like the impact of the black against the white, the stock really emphasises the black well.
A concern may be the wieght of the stock with regards to folding. I think double sided printing would be best rather than folding it more horizontally as well when it isn't necessary.

Poster designs

To accompnay the exhibition I want to create large scale posters as well as flyers to infrom people of the exhibiion. I have kept the same colour palette and experiemented with imagery and copy. I have incorporated some lyrics from The Specials song's about politics and life to emphasise the themes of the time.

I want to create a set of posters, I have kept to a momochrome colour palette as I think it is appropriate to the genre of music, then again the music is lively and fun and so I'm not sure if an elelment of colour is needed.

Exhibition guide- cover designs

I started designing the cover of the exhibition guide, I want it to be simple and let the title/logo be the focus. But the detials of the exhibition will need to be highlighted and prioritised in order of importance. I tried out white backgrounds and also different tints of grey, on a stand a white guide is not going to stand out unlike a block colour.

I then developed the content for the insdie of the guide, arranging imagery and copy and how this would read best. I didn't want each page to be the same and as it folds out I want it to flow.

Exhibition design layout ideas

I've divided the length into8 sections which will be front back and fold down into a flat 1/8 of this. Each section is quite small but most areas of information will work across two sections.
I have inlcuded a map of the exhibition for people to navigate round the exhibition, a background of the theme and then extra information about each of the areas of the exhibition. There will be a lot of imagery as there isn't a lot of space for excessive copy.

Lyrics- Speicals, Bad Manners

Gangsters

Bernie Rhodes knows Don't Argue

Why must you record my phone calls?
Are you planning a bootleg LP?
Said you've been threatened by gangsters
Now it's you, that's threatening me

Can't fight corruption with con tricks
They use the law to commit crime
And I dread, dread to think what the future will bring
When we're living in gangster time

Don't call me scar face

Can't interrupt while I'm talking
Or they'll confiscate all your guitars
and catch 22 says if I sing the truth
they won't make me an overnight star

Don't offer us legal protection
They use the law to commit crime
I dread to think what the future will bring
When we're living in gangster time

Bernie Rhodes knows Don't Argue

Lyrics to Too Much Too Young :
You've done too much
much too young
Now you're married with a kid
when you could be having fun with me

oh no, no gimme no more pickni

You've done too much
much too young
Now you're married with a son
when you should be having fun with me

we don't want, we don't want
we don't want no more pickni

Ain't he cute?
No he ain't
He's just another burden
on the welfare state

You've done too much
much too young
Now you're married with a kid
when you could be having fun with me

no gimme,no gimme,no gimme no more pickni

Call me immature
Call me a poser
I'd love to spread manure in your bed of roses
Don't want to be rich
Don't want to be famous
But I'd really hate to have the same name as you
(you silly moo)

You've done too much
much too young
Now you're married with a kid
when you could be having fun with me

gi we de birth control, we no want no pickni

You've done too much
much too young
Now you're chained to the cooker
making currant buns for tea

oh no, no gimme no more pickni

Ain't you heard of the starving millions
Ain't you heard of contraception
Do you really a program of sterilization
Take control of the population boom
It's in your living room
Keep a generation gap
Try wearing a cap

Ghost Town
This town, is coming like a ghost town
All the clubs have been closed down
This place, is coming like a ghost town
Bands won't play no more
too much fighting on the dance floor

Do you remember the good old days
Before the ghost town?
We danced and sang,
And the music played inna de boomtown

This town, is coming like a ghost town
Why must the youth fight against themselves?
Government leaving the youth on the shelf
This place, is coming like a ghost town
No job to be found in this country
Can't go on no more
The people getting angry

This town, is coming like a ghost town
This town, is coming like a ghost town
This town, is coming like a ghost town
This town, is coming like a ghost town

Do the dog
All you punks and all you teds
National Front and Natti dreds
Mods, rockers, hippies and skinheads
Keep on fighting 'till you're dead

Who am I to say?
Who am I to say?
Am I just a hypocrite?
Another piece of your bullshit
Am I the dog the bit, the hand of the man that feeds it?

Do the dog, do the dog
Do the dog, not the donkey
Do the dog, don't be a jerk
Do the dog, watch who you work for
Do the do the do the do the dog
Everybody's doing the dog

Take your F.A. aggravation
Fight it out on New Street station
Master racial masturbation
Causes National Front frustration

Who am I to say?
To the IRA
To the UDA
Soldier boy from UK
Am I just a hypocrite?
Another piece of your bullshit
Am I the dog the bit, the hand of the man that feeds it?

Do the dog, do the dog
Do the dog, not the donkey
Do the dog, don't be a jerk
Do the dog, watch who you work for
Do the do the do the do the dog
Do the do the do the do the dog
Do the do the do the do the dog
Everybody's doing the dog

Practise formats/folds

I made a few mock ups of fold just to see what I could work with. I drew down a few ideas first which I liked the look of because of their interactive elements.

These are some of the ideas I was looking into, I like the idea of something almost growing and revealing more as it is opened which is kind of how the concertina fold works.

I thought about different ways I could incorporate the idea of music into a publication, looking at music books and manuscript and also the keyboard of a piano which I always used to make when I was younger when I took piano lessons, it is a very basic idea but the keys are very noticable and understood.

I took the concertina idea further to see what I could do with it, I looked at using the keys of the piano again and how this would create a continuous line of key when folded out.
I mocked up a few of the folds in different scales and sizes. the hotdog fold isn't realy suitable for the kind of look I want this to have, I don't want it to be pretentious or copmlicated but want it to be relevant and interesting and although I could use this to fold out into a poster and include losts of different section, I don't like that there is a cut in the paper.

I am working with a 8 fold concertina fold here, so there are 16 sides althogether which would give me a lot of space to work with without creating a booklet. At this time I'm not sure if this would be entirely suitable for the exhibition and for a guide but am going to explore it a bit further to see how it could work.

This is the idea of the piano and the keys contining inside to create the idea of a piano. I do like this but am unsure if there would be enough space alongside all of the content.

Formats

I've been looking into formats because I don't want my exhibition guide to be a standard booklet I want it to be something which is intriguing and is interactive with folds.
I like the idea of something folding out to reveal something else, if it was something like this though I wouldn't want it to be too big for people looking round to have to struggle with to carry in their hands.

Exhibition design

I found this useful reearch in an exhibition design book on 2d exhibition design focusing on the printed material. I definitely need to think about large scale material for an exhibition where it would be situated and how this scale would affect the design.

Things like this I had never even considered, like how things are read and at what level and for people of different abilities, different ages etc all need to be taken into consideration when working on a scale like this.

Exhibition Guides

I'm looking at different exisiting exhibition guuides and formats that they take. A lot are standard, pamphlet, roughly a5 size but I don't want to go with this I want something more intereactive and something with folds.

This is more like a poster which folds out with different areas of information on each section which will fold down to a single side which will act as the front.
I like the idea of using something which isn't an actual booklet where you turn the pages and rather something that folds out.

I like this one because it's different size folds, fold in to create an image when it's flat. They have obviously used a range of images as well to make it a range and make it appropriate to the exhibition.
